Historical Markers

Camp 1535 has been active in chronicling War Between the States historical events which took place in or are in some way connected to Ohio. 

Camp 1535's namesake, Brig. Gen. Roswell S. Ripley is commemorated with an Ohio Historical Society Marker at his birthplace in Worthington, OH

General John Hunt Morgan

The famous General John Hunt Morgan was captured in Ohio during July of 1863 when he led 2,460 troops racing past Union lines into Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio.

His imprisonment and escape is commemorated in a Historical Marker at the site of the old Ohio State Penitentiary in Columbus, OH.  The marker was a project of Camp 1535.

 

 


General Otho French Strahl, CSA

Unveiling of marker by Ohio Historical Society and SCV Camp 1535

Caspar Strahl, who came to America from Germany in 1750, was the great grandfather to Otho Strahl.  Otho was killed in the war and never married.  Capar's great great great great grandchildren, Mary Strahl Watt & Vera Strahl were present for the unveiling.

Recognition was given to Camp 1509 the AJ Ringo #1509 of  Newcastle, Indiana.  The camp contributed $500 to the erection of the marker.  Representing their camp  Harold Connerley, Indiana Div. Lt. Commander, Bob Brown, 2nd Lt Commander of the AJ Ringo Camp.

Andrew Verhoff from the Ohio Historical Society presents a commendation certificate to Camp 1535's Adjutant Jeff Yoest and Brian McKee, a local SCV member who helped in local coordination of the marker in Malta, OH.
